Background

Wireless power transfer (DEO: Draadloze Energie Overdracht in Dutch) enhances the user experience, as there is no need to connect a physical cable to power a device. It results in higher durability and robustness, facilitates automation and increases safety in hazardous industrial environments. Because of these advantages, the wireless charging market is experiencing infrequent growth. Consistent annual growth rates of the number of units sold are recorded from 20 to 30%. By 2024, sales are expected to reach as much as 2.2 billion units worldwide. However, the implementation of wireless power transfer is mainly for multinational companies. Small and medium sized companies, often have too few resources to adopt that technology. Even though the technology is sufficiently mature, the step to implement it in their products is simply too big.

To overcome this problem, this project fosters the knowledge transfer to the Flemish industry: Low-threshold and practice-oriented tools and expertise for the implementation of wireless energy transfer are developed in cooperation within Flemish, innovative companies. The focus here is on companies who want to implement wireless charging but do not have the manpower for it and/or sufficient knowledge in-house.

Objectives

The concrete objectives of this project are: (1) the construction of a low-power demonstrator, (2) the construction of a high-power demonstrator, (3) the realization of a low-threshold knowledge base with clear information focused on practical wireless power implementations. The various challenges reflected in these objectives are tackled in cooperation with the advisory committee. In addition to these achievements, the project also has a strong focus on dissemination and bringing companies together to ensure flow and effective application of the project results to the members of the supervisory committee and the wider target group of Flemish companies.
